United Kingdom.

Transport Secretary Justine Greening is gearing up to hit hard-pressed motorists with road tolls.

Laws allowing “free flow” charging so drivers pay when their number plates are scanned will be put before MPs next year.

Ministers hope the move will encourage private firms to build new motorways.

The Government pledged not to introduce charges on existing roads – but has no money to pay for new ones.

An AA spokesman said: “When fuel prices are so high and budgets are stretched motorists are already being priced off the roads.

“They should not be priced off even further.”

But the Department of Transport said: “We have been clear we would consider proposals to build new roads with private capital.”

The criticism comes as Ms Greening faces a grilling from the Commons Transport Select Committee today.
